AN ICHIJO SCHOOL TSUBA
MEIJI ERA (CIRCA 1875), SIGNED NOBUTOSHI (ENJU) TSUKURU

The polished shakudo free-form plate is carved in low relief and inlaid in gold and soft metals with a tiger running in front of a waterfall. The reverse is inlaid with a poetic inscription and two gold seals. The hitsu-ana are plugged in shibuichi which has a wood grain surface--height 7.4cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 3.5mm.

Lot Essay

Kudo Nobutoshi (Enju [fl. 1875]) was originally trained as a silversmith in Kaga. He later studied under Goto Ichijo (1791-1876) and became one of the many talented artists who form Ichijo's school.
