AN ISHIGURO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED ISHIGURO MASAAKI AND KAO

The five-lobed melon form shakudo nanako plate is carved in high relief and inlaid in gold, silver, and various soft metals with a pheasant on a rock, a large gold peony bloom below and a peahen in gold at the lower left. The reverse has a blooming plum tree with a bird in its branches and one in flight at the upper right in various soft metals. The circular nanako ground is of very fine grains. The edge of the plate is banded in heavy sheet gold--height 6.6cm., width 6.3cm., thickness 5.5mm.
