AN ISHIGURO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED ISHIGURO MASAAKI WITH KAO
The oval shakudo nanako plate of slightly convex (goishi) form is carved in very high relief and inlaid in gold, silver, and various soft metals with a hawk perched in a plum tree and a stream flowing below. The bird of prey is glaring at two small birds fleeing to the left; the design extends to the reverse with two more birds in flight. The plate has a gold rim cover with a 'cat-scratched' finish--height 7.3cm., width 6.8cm., thickness at center 5mm., at edge 3.5mm., thickness with inlay 9mm.
Double wood storage boxes. Inner box with inscription by Sato Kanzan, dated autumn, 1972.
Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 147, dated April 15th, 1971.
