AN UCHIKOSHI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED ICHIJOSAI HIROTOSHI AND KAO

The oval shibuichi plate tapers slightly to the edge. The polished surface is carved in relief and decorated in gold, silver, and shakudo inlay with a scholar seated before a waterfall. The reverse is similarly decorated with a meandering stream--height 7.4cm., width 6.9cm., thickness 6.25mm.

Lot Essay

Uchikoshi Hirotoshi (fl. 1800-1850) was the founder of the Uchikoshi school. He was a student of Yatabe Tsuju and Tamagawa Yoshinaga of Mito. He had many students and followers and many examples of their work have survived.
