A MINO SEKI UJIFUSA UTSUSHI KATANA IN THE MANNER OF SADAMUNE
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1590)
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune) and large point (o-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 1 sun, 8 bu (66.3cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.7cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.7cm.; carving (horimono): inside: maru-dome bo-hi extending into the tang; outside: ken below futatsuji-hi.
Forging pattern (jihada): an elegant ko-mokume resembling crepe de Chine.
Tempering pattern (hamon): chu-suguba/shallow notare with scattered, regular hummocks, all executed in fine, regularly-grained nie.
Point (boshi): elongated flame-brushed tip (hakikake) with quite an extensive kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): o-suriage; file marks (yasurime): new (kiri-yasuri); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): four; signature (mei): unsigned (mumei).
Uchigatana-koshirae comprising: a saya of matte maroon lacquer decorated with high-relief baleen-like spirals executed in black lacquer, mounted with shakudo nanako kojiri, kurikata, and koiguchi decorated with gold relief san-go-san kiri mon; the tsuka mounted with en suite fuchi-kashira and shakudo menuki in the form of san-go-san kiri-mon and kenuki; a shakudo nanako Mino Goto tsuba decorated in relief gold with san-go-san kiri mon and floral roundels in shakudo and gold, circa 1700.-- Length of koshirae 100.4cm.; length of tsuka 26.1cm.; tsuba height 7.6cm., width 6.8cm., thickness 8mm.
