A KAIBU ASHU WAKIZASHI
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1400), SIGNED ASHU [NO] JU YASUUJI
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune) and large point (o-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 4 sun, 5 bu (43.8cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.1cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): itame masame with chikei.
Tempering pattern (hamon): hoso-suguba of o-midare with 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and kinsuji.
Point (boshi): midare-komi with kaeri extending to area above the yokote.
Tang (nakago): shape (keitai): wide, Bizen type; file marks (yasurime): o-sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (katana-mei): Ashu [no] ju Yasuuji.
Shirasaya with attestation signed Shunsui (Kasumi Toshio).
Koshirae, circa 1800, comprising: a red-brown saya simulating creased leather, mounted with a silvered koiguchi, kurikata, kojiri and uragawara all carved with an overall wave design; a black-lacquered same tsuka with leather wrapping, mounted with a pair of gold and shakudo menuki in the form of turtles; a silver mokko tsuba; a matching Goto school kozuka executed completely in shakudo.-- Length of koshirae 62.3cm.; length of tsuka 12.6cm.; tsuba height 6.8cm., width 6.3cm., thickness 8mm.; length of kozuka 10.2cm. Very small area of restoration to the saya.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 71937, dated Showa 38 (1963).
