EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650), SIGNED HIZEN [NO] KUNI [NO] JU OMI DAIJO FUJIWARA TADAHIRO

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 8.5 bu ( 69.4cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.6cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): ko-mokume nashiji with a strongly differentiated series of strata resembling matsukawa-hada; together with some wide grain mid-blade on the outside showing masame, which is also visible along the entire shinogi on both sides.
Tempering pattern (hamon): suguba in restrained ko-nie. Point (boshi): flame-brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): quite slender, upcurved, tapering and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): reverse katte-sagari; end (nakagojiri): pronounced iriyamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Hizen [no] Kuni [no] ju Omi Daijo Fujiwara Tadahiro.

Shirasaya.

Uchigatana-koshirae comprising: a black ishime saya, mounted with kojiri, kurikata and koiguchi in plain dark brown ishime copper, in Sendai style, unsigned; the tsuka mounted with a pair of shakudo menuki formed as armpit protectors (gyoyo) and a fuchi kashira en suite to the saya fittings; an iron tsuba with amida-yasuri, unsigned, circa 1800.-- Length of koshirae 94.5cm.; length of tsuka 21.5cm.; tsuba height 7.8cm., width 6.7cm., thickness 8mm. Slight dents, chips and cracks to the saya
