A HIZEN TADAYOSHI TACHI
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650), SIGNED HIZEN [NO] KUNI [NO] JU FUIJIWARA TADAHIRO

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 4 sun, 7 bu (75.0cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.2cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): small wood burl (ko-mokume) with 'pear-skin' surface (nashiji).
Tempering pattern (hamon): chu-suguba with small 'legs' (ko-ashi) and yo, the hamon abruptly becoming clove (choji) about 14cm. from the hamachi.
Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender, tapering and with a dry brown patina, unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): iriyamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (tachimei): Hizen [no] Kuni [no] ju Fujiwara Tadahiro.

Shirasaya.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 350351, Showa 52 (1977); a koshu tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 17045, Showa 53 (1978); and two origami by the Nihon token kenkyukai, both signed Nabeshima Naotsugu.
