A SILVER AND GOLD-DECORATED TWICE-'WRAPPED' MATCHLOCK GUN
EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The .75 bore cylindrical barrel with flattened peep line set with a single adjustable [vertical aligner missing] sight and a bar sight at the muzzle; the exposed part of the barrel decorated in siler nunome with a celestial dragon amidst clouds above a gold nunome Tokugawa aoi-mon and signed Tosa [no] Kami. The barrel signed Ni-ju ketai maki bari [twice wrapped] and Sesshu [no] ju--[rust obliterated]; the one piece wood stock fitted with plain brass furniture and with an iron cock with 'toadskin' silver decoration; the stock signed Akaura Riheie saku, emblazoned with lacquer omodaka mon and with peg holes strengthened with brass sakura--overall length 39¼in. (99.7cm.).
