A GOLD AND SILVER-DECORATED MATCHLOCK GUN
MIDDLE EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY, SIGNED INOUE ZAEMON SAKU
The .75 bore octagonal barrel fitted with a set sight on the peep line and a bar sight on the flared muzzle; the exposed surface decorated with silver and gold nunome designs of grapevines and squirrels and with grapes rendered in large silver nuggets, a silver nunome fretwork band decorating either end; the barrel signed Sesshu [no] ju ---Inoue Zaiemon saku. The one-piece wood stock fitted with plain brass furniture and iron cock with silver 'toadskin' decoration; the stock signed Okada Kihachi--saku and the barrel stamped with a later arsenal inventory mark, Jinchin 783 ban bu tansu--overall length 41 in. (104.1cm.).
