Lot Essay

According to the catalogue raisonne of the artist's oeuvre, a bust of Juno carved in 1864 was sold at the auction of the sculptor's estate and studio contents in 1875 as lot 74. It is possible that the present marble is this bust. The signature was probably added by a studio assistant after the artist's death in 1874.
