DAOGUANG SEAL MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD

The bowl with deep rounded sides, naturalistically painted with three tiers of overlapping lotus petals in shaded pink enamels with finely detailed veining, below a band of stylized stamens in white and red and above a narrow stippled-green border around the foot, the dish similarly decorated, the domed cover also painted with tiers of overlapping lotus petals, on a ground of stylized leaves, the spherical gilt knop rising from a base painted to simulate the lotus seed-pod, the interiors glazed white with the rims and footrims gilded--4 1/2 in. (11.5cm.) diam.

A pair of covered bowls of the same size and decoration, also with Daoguang marks, are illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hu, no. 93

For the origin of this design compare a covered bowl of enameled metal with a Kangxi yuzhi mark included in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, Special Exhibition of Enamelled Painted Wares of the Ch'ing Dynasty, 1979, Catalogue no. 128, of almost the same size and design, but the lotus petals on the cover pointing towards the knop
