Provenance
The initials HCS are those of Hepzibah Clarke Swan, according to family tradition. Over several generations, the Clarke family commissioned important Boston-made silver, including Jacob Hurd's salver at Yale bearing the arms of Hepzibah Clarke Swan's grandfather, William Clarke (Buhler & Hood, American Silver, fig. 151), and Hurd's coffee pot at Winterthur (Martha Fales, Early American Silver, 1970, fig. 20). The Clarke name appears numerous times in Revere's account books.
