EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1600)

The round iron plate of openwork design shows two dragons facing one another, and pursuing the flaming jewel that is between them at the top. The outer edge of the seppa-dai area and the hitsu-ana shape are of scrollwork pattern--height and width 7.6cm., thickness 5.0mm.

Lot Essay

Although the design and style are in the Hizen Nagasaki school tradition that produced Canton (Chinese) subjects, it is more likely that this tsuba was produced by the Shoami school of Kyoto in the Canton style. In Kyoto at this time, it was fashionable to wear designs of foreign derivation, both Chinese and European.
