A HAMANO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED HIROYUKI

The oval polished brass plate has a slightly raised rim and polished edge. It is decorated in high relief with the Red Cliff theme: a poet being ferried away from a high rocky promontory. A full silver moon in clouds is above left. The reverse is decorated with cliffs, waterfall, and pine tree in shakudo. The inlay is of copper, shakudo, silver and gold. It is signed on the reverse--height 6.5cm., width 5.7cm., thickness 5.0mm.

Lot Essay

Hamano Hiroyuki (1763-1837) more commonly signed Yasuyuki, and is listed under that name. He was a student of Hamano Naoyuki (fl. 1775) and was the adopted son and student of Hamano Noriyuki (1736-1787). He signed with many art names, various kao and seals. He was a most prolific artist. He was born in Tokushima in Awa Province (Shikoku), but he worked most of his life at Edo. His retired name (nyudo) was Yushin.
