Born in 1831, Tomotoshi was the son of Tomoyoshi IV; he lived at Mito in Hitachi and later in Edo. The mounting is original and complete.

PROBABLY NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (14TH CENTURY), ATTRIBUTED TO THE YAMASHIRO NOBUKUNI SCHOOL
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 1 sun, 5 bu (65.3cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.7cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 0.8cm.; carving (horimono): bo-hi on both sides extending through the nakago.
Forging pattern (jihada): lustrous wood grain (itame) similar to the manner of Rai Kunimitsu.
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba in nie and ara-nie.
Point (boshi): a flamboyant brush tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): shortened (suriage); file marks (yasurime): kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei): unsigned (mumei).

Katana-koshirae comprising: a black lacquer saya fitted with a shakudo kurikata deeply carved with clouds and a shakudo and gold kojiri with gold edging and applied with a deeply carved and molded celestial dragon in gold, signed Ichiryu Tomotoshi on an inlaid gold plaque; a baleen-wrapped tsuka set with a pair of gold and shakudo menuki in the form of dragons amidst clouds, shakudo and gold fuchi kashira applied with gold leaves swept by the wind and leaping tiger in gold and shakudo, signed Ichiryu Tomotoshi with kao; the shakudo tsuba is carved with a wind pattern and applied in the round with a deeply molded and carved model of an eagle in downward flight. Signed Motome ni ojite (by special order for) Fujiwara Tokitoshi and on the reverse Ichiryu Tomotoshi with kao.
