AN ECHIZEN KO-WAKIZASHI
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1625), ATTRIBUTED TO HARIMA DAIJO SHIGETAKA
Configuration (sugata): of flat, wedge section (hira-zukuri) and shallow peaked back (iori-mune); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 8 bu (32.8cm.); curvature (sori): almost none; carving (horimono): inside (ura): goma-bashi; outside (omote): shin no kurikara within a hi.
Forging pattern (jihada): fine and densely compacted wood burl grain (itame mokume).
Tempering pattern (hamon): wide suguba with rolling invections and irregularities (gonome, o-gonome midare) in bright nie.
Point (boshi): Jizo.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): fish belly (tanago) and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei): unsigned (mumei).
Shirasaya.
Accompanied by a futsu kicho token certificate, no. 5700370, Showa 57 (1982), issued by the N.B.T.H.K.; and a kanteisho, no. 5685, Showa 57 (1982) issued by the Nihon Token Hozon Kai.
