A REGENCY SILVER SALVER
LONDON, 1819, MAKER'S MARK OF PAUL STORR

Of shaped circular form, raised on four massive acanthus scroll and rocaille feet flanked by foliate grapes, the applied rim with acanthus scrolls and rocaille at intervals, the center engraved with a ocat-of-arms and helm within foliate mantling, the reverse engraved with a presentation inscription, marked under base--11 1/4in. (28.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: Given to W. CROSS by his excellent Friend THE REVd. HUGH HORNBY. 1819

The arms are those of Cross impaling those of Chaffres, as borne by William Cross of Redscar and Cottam, born in 1771, he married in 1813 Ellen, daughter of Edward of Chaffres. He died in 1827. His son, John Edward Cross married in 1854 Elizabeth, daughter of Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby.
