MEIJI PERIOD (CIRCA 1880), SIGNED SHINJU SADAKATSU, WITH GOLD SEAL

The oval copper plate with polished surface and slightly raised rim, carved and inlaid on the face with an oni looking at his reflection in a mirror and on the reverse with an umbrella with shakudo and gold handle beside a shibuichi case, the kozuka hitsu plugged in gold--9.2 cm. high, 8.5 cm. wide

Lot Essay

Shinju Sadakatsu, of the Sukuragawa family, was born in 1848 at Mito in Hitachi province. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to Hagiya Katsuhira. He died in 1897.
