AN IWASHIRO WAKIZASHI
EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY), SIGNED KANETOMO, ATTRIBUTED TO KANETOMO I


Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 4 sun, 6 bu (44.3 cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.4 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 0.8 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain (itame).
Tempering pattern (hamon): small and very sharply pointed regular invections (ko-togari-gonome), principally in the upper half of the blade; the lower section intersperced with 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and some gonome, all executed in ko-nie.
Point (boshi): brushed tip (hakikake).
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): slender, slight shortened (suriage) approximately 4 cm., and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): takanoha (inverted V); end (nakagojiri): squared (kiri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei), katana-mei: Kanetomo. [Condition OK.]

Togidashi-zaya wakizashi-koshirae comprising: a togidashi hanakairagi-same saya (covered with a stellar configuration of same ground flush and filled with black lacquer) wrapped haraawase kise (of one section, joined on the ura); Goto style shakudo nanako kozuka applied with silver and gold shishi, unsigned; shakudo nanako mokkogata tsuba in Goto style applied with gold shishi and sutra cases, unsigned, late 18th Century; the black-wrapped tsuka is fitted with a pair of shishi menuki and a pair of shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira matching the tsuba and applied with gold and silver shishi, unsigned, early 19th Century---length of koshirae 69 cm., length of tsuka 17.2 cm., length of kozuka 9.5 cm., height of tsuba 7.3 cm. [Some rubbing to the back of the kozuka.]
