AN MINO SEKI TANTO
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1660), SIGNED TAMBA (NO) KAMI FUJIWARA TERUKADO
Configuration (sugata): of flat, wedge section (hira-zukuri) with tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune); length (nagasa): 5 sun, 9.5 bu ( 18.0cm.); curvature (sori): slight drop in the back of the blade towards the point (uchizori); carving (horimono): outside (omote): hoju (tama amidst flames).
Forging pattern (jihada): wood grain (itame) becoming slightly straight grain (masame) in areas.
Tempering pattern (hamon): shallow, irregular invections (gonome) executed in nioi and nie.
Point (boshi): Jizo with moderate turn-back.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): tapering, notched to one side of the jiri and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sloping (sujikai); end (nakagojiri): notched to one side; holes (mekugi-ana): two; signature (mei), katana-mei: Tamba (no) Kami Fujiwara Terukado. [Very slight surface scratches.]
Kokei-tanto-koshirae comprising: a saya covered with silk brocade and covered with a transparent, deep russet lacquer; diminutive oval horn tsuba; white-wrapped tsuka fitted with an iron fuchi, a horn kashira and a pair of shakudo and gilt tsubo menuki---length of koshirae 30.8 cm., length of tsuka 9.0 cm. [Superficial scratches to saya.]
