MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
Of rectangular shape with rounded corners and slightly domed cover, lavishly decorated in rich gold takamaki-e with pavilions perched on tall cliffs over a wide river traversed by a Chinese arched bridge, the sky rendered in okibirame and various details executed in kirigane, kimpun and nashiji with large camellia blossoms inlaid in red coral and details of the villas inlaid in aogai, the design continued on the underside of the lid and well of the box with nashiji sky and with a Japanese bridge in gold foil traversing the water, the fittings okibirame with chased silver mounts and the mizuire of silver cast in the form of a plum blossom, the base nashiji, silver mounts- 10 3/4 x 9 1/2 x 2 in. (27.3 x 24.2 x 5.2 cm.)
