A LARGE EARTHENWARE JAR
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED KINKOZAN

Of ovoid form set on three bracket feet and decorated in colored enamels and gilt with two large rectangular panels reserved on a field of cobalt blue and gilt floral meander, one panel depicting seven beauties in a bamboo garden, an allusion to the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, and the opposite panel picturing a scene of mounted horseman rushing down a road, the borders of the panel, foot and neck all gilt floral patterns, each panel signed Gyokumei, seal on base set on a spray of maple leaves, cover lacking- 10 n3/4 in. (27.1 cm.) high
