A LARGE EARTHENWARE URN ON STAND
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED DAI NIHON KYOTO TOJIKI GOSHIGAISHA RYOZAN

The urn resting on a separate stand of globular form with loop handles and fitted with a tall, domed spire cover, painted in gilt and colored enamels on a cream crackle ground dotted with gilt with three friezes of villas in river landscapes, figures or numerous fruits and vegetables, each separated by gilt bands, the collar encircled by stacked rings of formal brocade, geometric patterns and flowers, the waisted foot matching, the spire cover painted with swirling panels of brocade decoration and with alternating ovals of formal decoration around the garlic-form midsection; the square stand supported on four bracket feet painted on the top flat surface with a wide, circular band of fruits and vegetables matching the band on the urn which is surrounded by lush flowerheads, the bracket feet patterned with brocade and wisteria vines and the stylized rui panels between the supports painted with figures at various pursuits, identical signature in gilt on the underside of the stand- 16 1/2 in. (41.9 cm.) high overall, knop restored (3)
