A LARGE EARTHENWARE JAR AND COVER
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED NIHON SATSUMA KINRAN TOKI TOKOZAN ZO AND BEARING SATSUMA MON

Of ovoid form painted in gilt and enamels of blue, red, green and lavender with two large opposing panels of stands of chrysanthemums and peonies reserved on the cream crackle glazed ground, the panels surrounded by large, swirling areas of formal decoration, including flowers, phoenixes and foliate scroll, and with three additional cloud-shaped medallions of karashishi and flowers encircling the shoulder, the foot ringed by a wide band of floral lappets and the mouth by a narrow band of hanabishi, the domed cover matching and moulded with a flattenned bud-form knop painted in gilt with aoi [Tokugawa] mon- 20 5/8 in. (52.5 cm.) high
