While no kindred paintings have come to light, the constituent elements here suggest a date in the lte 1920's to 1930's. The layering of textured strokes in the mountains, the contrasts of dark and light ink in both the foreground and the background, the shading used along crinkled cloud edges and the composition of the mountain range are all suggestive of such a date. The broadly applied gray to define the darkened sky and the earth mound of the foreground are highly reminiscent of Taikan's 1910 "Flowing waters handscroll" (Yamatane Art Museum), one of his first important ink works.
