Lot Essay

Fukui Ryonosuke is best known for traditionally composed, sepia-toned landscape, still life, and portrait paintings. Literary and symbolic, his work was influenced by his travels in Europe. He won a prize in 1946 at the "41st South Pacific Western Painting Exhibition" in Tokyo, and in 1954 his painting entitled "Window" was a prize winner at the "18th Free Artists Exhibition". Fukui was also known for his prints which he exhibited internationally beginning in 1959.
