Lot Essay
Charles-Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873), third son of Louis, King of Holland and his wife Hortense de Beauharnais (see lot 60), was a nephew of Emperor Napoleon I. After the death of the latter's son, Napoleon II (the Duke of Reichstadt, see lots 105, 113), he became the head of the Napoleonic dynasty. He was President of the French Republic 1848-1852 when he was proclaimed Emperor of the French. Napoleon III was deposed after his defeat by the Prussian forces at Sedan in 1870. He married Eugenie de Montijo (1826-1920) in 1853 and they had one son, the ill-fated Eugene-Louis-John-Joseph, Prince Impérial, born 1856, who perished in the Zulu campaign in 1879.
