Lot Essay

The first two parts (of three) of the fine library of John Towneley (1731-1813). Included in the 905 lots of the first part is the "Towneley Homer," a valuable Greek MS. Among some of the buyers' names listed are: Lord Byron (buyer of lot 280, Burton's History of Ireland, 1693), S. Jebb Thwaites, Dibdin, Heber, and many other notable collectors.
