A RARE HARDSTONE INLAID BLACK LACQUER AND CINNABAR LACQUER TABLE SCREEN

Formed as a hand scroll partially unrolled to show a scene of scholars in a bamboo grove executed in hardstones and mother-of-pearl inlaid in a black lacquer ground, the back carved in relief with peonies and rocks reserved on a diaper ground imitating the brocade backing of the scroll which continues around the ends, raised on a cinnabar lacquer stand elaborately carved all over with peonies incorporating brocade balls held within peony blossoms to form the feet, some losses and some restoration--21 1/8in. (53.6cm.) high
