A LARGE LACQUER BOX AND COVER
EDO PERIOD (18TH CENTURY)

The rectangular box fitted with a shallow cover and inner tray decorated in Rimpa style in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, aogai and roiro with a scene of five deer stopping by the side of a flowing river under pine and maple trees, the leaves rendered in gold, silver or aogai, many worn and now showing the black underlayer, with additional matching trees continued on the sides of the box, all on a dense, rich nashiji ground; the underside of the lid decorated with a country pavilion nestled in hills and beside rocks and a stream on which float the leaves of maples, also rendered in gold and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e and aogai on a nashiji ground; the fitted, shallow tray lacquered with a horned baku (fantastic beast) below an enormous stand of lespedeza, leaves in gold and aogai and also set on a nashiji ground; the well of the box and base brownish-black lacquer dusted with nashiji; rims pewter- 15 1/2 x 12 3/8 x 5 1/8 in. (39.3 x 31.4 x 13 cm.), fading, wear or losses, old repairs
