A CLOISONNE ENAMEL TRAY
MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED WITH A SILVER WIRE SEAL SOSUKE [NAMIKAWA SOSUKE (1847-1910)]

The petal-rim tray with five, rounded lobes worked in enamels outlined in gold wire and in wireless enamels with a scene of two small, yellow birds perched on a branch of flowering white plum below shaded green leaves of bamboo, the branches of the tree black and grey and the blossoms white with brown details, the ground brown-tinged grey, the rim shakudo, signed with the name of the painter responsible for the design on the lower left in black enamel Shotei [Watanabe Shotei] and sealed in red enamel and silver wire, decorated on the underside in subdued enamels of red, yellow, blue and green with stylized phoenix medallions, butterflies, lotus buds and a chrysanthemum spray against a chocolate brown ground ornamented with gold wire scrollwork- 10 5/8 in. (26.8 cm.) diameter, minute surface pitting and small flecks of discoloration below branch and under the rim
