TWO MATCHING GILT COPPER PRESENTATION VASES
EDO PERIOD (DATED 1716 AND 1761) AND EXTENSIVELY INSCRIBED
Each large beaker vase cast with a stepped base rising to four raised panels of lotus on a stippled ground below a band at the midsection of raised aoi mon centered by engraved lotus scroll, also cast at the neck by matching lotus lappet panels of lotus scroll on a stippled ground, each vessel extensively inscribed on the body, the earlier vase dated Shotoku 6 (1716), 4th month, hinoe saru (year of the monkey) misoka (last day of the month) and inscribed Yushoin Dono Sonzen (name of the deceased) Hoken suru (dedicatory offering to a shrine), odo kabin (flower vase) Jushiige jiju ken Yamato no kami Minamoto Ason Kuze Shigeyuki (name of the donor Minamoto Kuze Shigeyuki and rank titles), the later vase dated Horeiki 11 (1761), kanoto mi (year of the snake), 6th month, 12th day, Hoken suru (dedicatory offering to a shrine) odo kabin (flower vase) Junshinin Dono Sonzen (name of the deceased) Jushiige gyojiju ken Saemon no jo Minamoto Ason Sakae Tadayori (name of the donor and rank titles) - 13 1/4 and 13 in.
