A STAFFORDSHIRE WHITE SALTGLAZE TEAPOT AND COVER
CIRCA 1750

The dome cover with flattened spire finial moulded with bands of stiff leaf-tips, with fluted spout and notched loop handle, the body moulded with branches of oak with acorns alternating with shells above two bands of leaf-tips and further shells and foliage, raised on three paw feet headed by shells, Jacobs Collection no. 540 (minute chips to spout, short hairline crack at rim)--5 5/8in. (14.3cm.) high

Cf. Mountford, Illustrated Guide, pl. 92 for a smaller teapot and its block similar in form to the present example, but not raised on three legs; Luxmoore, Saltglaze, pl.47, no. 9 for a similar block; and Draper, Northampton, fig. 4 for a similarly shaped pot enriched with cobalt formerly in the Manfield Collection

The notched loop handle would appear to be an indication that this piece was manufactured at the 'Big House' Burslem by Tom and John Wedgwood.
