With gilt ball finial and loop handles rising from mask terminals, the creamware body decorated with a pebbled surface-agate in blue and green slips, on a square black basaltes plith, Jacobs Collection no. 273 (some restoration to handles and retouching to gilding, chips restored on stem)--12 1/8in. Lot Essay

Cf. Towner, Creamware, p. 70, plate 27 for a variegated vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum similar in shape to the present example but with the gilt mask terminals at the shoulder. Listed as shape no. 80 in the First Shape Book, the present model was made in ten sizes ranging from 5 1/2in. to 10 1/2in. high and in a variety of bodies including Pebble, Gilt, Black and Plain Biscuit.
