Lot Essay

The design for this clock is closely related to no. 58 in Francois Vion's Livre de desseins of circa 1770, a model which was sold by Jean-Francois Violet, the maître fondeur, for 171 livres. Related clocks were sold by Mrs. Gaby Saloman, Sotheby's London, 1 July 1966, lot 50 and by S. Eckman Esq., Sotheby's London, 6 October 1967, lot 43, while a more elaborate model was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 10 December 1992, lot 77
