1988 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLTC TOUR GLIDE CLASSIC
Vin No. 1HDID BLIXJ Y50001 61
Cream/Champagne Gold
Engine: V2, overhead valve, evolution, 80ci; Gearbox: five speed, constant mesh; Brakes: dual disc.
The idea was to take the effort out of bicycling. In 1903 Bill Harley and the Davidson brothers were ready to put their idea into production, and in fact they produced a grand total of three motorcycles. All three were bought and paid for before they were completed. With the help of the Davidson's cabinet maker father, a 10 x 15 foot "factory" was erected in the Davidson backyard. They painted "Harley-Davidson Motor Co." on the door, and a legend was born.
As the sport of motorcycling matured and the nation's roads and highways improved, more and more riders took to the open road to take advantage of their love of motorcyling, increased free time, and sense of adventure. To meet the demand for a more responsive and comfortable machine, in 1936 Harley-Davidson introduced the powerful EL. In the early forties, the overhead-valve engine grew to 74 cubic inches (1,200cc) and the motorcycle was designated the FL. The FL became known as the "King oÿ the Highway" and represented the ultimate in highway cruising comfort.
The FLTC Tour Glide ushered in a whole new era of motorcycle touring performance with its many advanced features, such as a rubber isolated drive train, enclosed oil bÿath drive chain, five speed transmission, frame mounted fairing with dual head lights, and unique steering design.
This 1988 FLTC Tour Glide Classic was one of the first bikes off the production line at Harley-Davidson in 1987. Only 745 FLTCs were produced in 1988 (total production at Harley-Davidson in 1988 was 47,325) making this a rare and desirable bike. This particular bike was modified by the owner to resemble the FLHS Electra Glide Sport which, due to great demand is making a comeback for Harley-Davidson in 1995. Malcolm Forbes, the proud owner, covered thousands of miles on the highways of North America on his annual Friendship Tours on this FLTC Tour Glide Classic. Malcolm Forbes stated in his memoirs, "More than I dreamed, there is a world waiting out there along America's highways, but you'll hardly touch it in a car, encased in steel and glass. The best way to discover it is from the saddle of a motorcycle, where you can feel, hear and smell your environment from a seat with horizon-to-horizon vision."
