ROMAN, 18TH CENTURY, THE PEDESTAL EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The shallow basin formed as a sea monster, its head and tail at opposite ends, the underside of the basin carved overall with scales, the center of the well with a rosette (repaired) ----- 24½in. (62.2cm.) diam., raised on a Neo-classic iron, bronze and variegated marble pedestal, with four brackets rising from the helmet finials of four herm figures of Athena, the pilasters cast with a snake entwined around a spear, raised on a shaped Brescian marble base, the whole supported on a conforming grey marble plinth, each side carved with a rosette ----- 43in. (119.2cm.) high, not including brackets
