CARL MAYS LETTER

Details
CARL MAYS LETTER
A letter written on Cleveland Indians letterhead from former pitcher Carl Mays to writer George Girsch. The letter disputes a reported incident following the unfortunate accident in which Ray Chapman was killed by May's pitch. Fred Haney had explained that Cobb directed the first three batters in the next game which Mays pitched to fall down regardless of where the pitch was thrown. This rattled Mays and Detroit trounced him. Mays writes that Haney lied about the outcome and that he pitched twenty-seven scoreless innings after hitting Chapman. This lot also includes a reply letter to Girsch in which Haney tells the story of what Cobb did, but confirms that Mays pitched exceptionally. (2)
