AN ITALIAN BAROQUE STYLE PIETRA DURA TABLE TOP

Centrally inlaid with an octangonal panel of onyx within a banding of specimen marbles including lapis lazuli, Siena and rosso antico within a geometric panel of alternating roundels and diamonds of brocatelle and levanto rosso against a paragone ground within a border fitted with peltae of verde antico, lapis lazuli and brocatelle- 62½in. x 50in. 3/4cm. (159cm. x 129cm.)

This table top is a copy of a well-known Roman example dating to the last quarter of the 16th century, now in the collection of Lord Rothschild, which is illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tiempo de Gusto: Roma e il Regno delle Due Sicile, vol. II, 1984, p. 91, fig. 177.
