A NARA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700), SIGNED KANESHIGE

The oval iron plate has a hammered surface and many fine iron bones. The lower right quadrant is decorated with relief inlay of chrysanthemums and bamboo growing over a bamboo trellis. The inlay is of shakudo, silver and gold. The reverse has more of the trellis and gold dots of dew. It is signed on the reverse--height 7.0cm., width 6.6cm., thickness 4.5mm.
