The earliest reference to a chest-of-drawers found in New England inventories dates from the early 1640s. Chests-of-drawers, actually predate chests-with-drawers, and were an upscale alternative to simple board chests. (Benno M. Forman, "The Chest of Drawers in America, 1635-1730," Winterthur Portfolio, 20, no. 1, (Spring, 1985), pp. 1-15).

Microanalysis has determined the secondary wood is white pine (pinus strobus).
