Lot Essay

This unique worktable features the elegant embellishments of a reeded top, fluted stiles, finely turned legs and ivory escutcheons. Several unusual features distinguish this table from others of the same period. The hinged leaf, supported by fly leaves, opens to provide for more work space. This feature also allows for the placement of a chair pulled up under the leaf. To illuminate the work at hand, candle slides are located on each side of the table. The left side of the case is fitted with a compartmented long drawer for the storage of sundries. All of thes extra details added expense to the final cost of this delicate table when custom made for its now unknown patron.

A similar worktable with folding double top rather than drop-leaf is illustrated in American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, (New York, 1965), p. 500, P1215.
