Lot Essay

In a letter to Nancy Newhall in 1942, Weston mentioned that he could no longer photograph at Point Lobos since the Army had taken over the area. In response, Weston photographed Charis nude with her gas mask, portraits which Newhall later insisted be included in Weston's 1946 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.(citing Conger)
