Lot Essay

This sidechair relates to a number of sidechairs attributed to Thomas Davenport (1681-1745) of Newport. The small carved ears on the splat are characteristic of Davenport and appear on a number of sidechairs attributed to his shop. See The Magazine Antiques vol. CXXI, no. 5 (May, 1982), p. 1163, fig. 10. Sidechairs which are identical in all respects except without ears are more common. See Carpenter, The Arts and Crafts of Newport, Rhode Island, 1640-1820, (Newport, 1954), p. 44, plate 18.
