Lot Essay

The offered lot is an example of the paysages panoramiques series which the firm Zuber et Cie first successfully printed in 1805 with the series Vues de Suisse. The firm, which Zuber père turned over to his sons in 1835, went on to issue scenes from romantic literature as well as historical events, which developed into romanticized and generalized neoclassical subject matters. During the 1840s and '50s, gardens and flowers placed close to the picture plane began to dominate the idyllic and exotic panoramas. These décors included the series 'Isola Bella' (1842-3), 'Eldorado' (1848) and 'Les Zones Terreste' (1855) (see C. Lynn, Wallpaper in America, 1980, pp. 190-196). Another set from this series was sold in these Rooms, 26 April 1994, lot 142.
