(11 9/16 x 8 3/16 x 3/4in.), A JEWELLED BINDING WITH 746 JEWELS ON AN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT, dark blue levant morocco, rounded bevelled edges, covers with gilt fillet and gilt dotted line borders around a broad panel border of stippled gold leaf inlaid with two bands of black morocco strapwork and incorporating a repeated leaf and stylized flower design with inlays of green, brown, purple and white morocco, SET WITH 16 CARNELIANS AND 16 TURQUOISES, the centers with a large rectangular panel with shaped corners framed in inlaid brown morocco strapwork, the upper panel recessed and containing an inner border framed by two bands of inlaid black morocco strip and SET WITH 24 OPALS ALTERNATED WITH 24 MOTHER-OF-PEARL INSET PANELS, framing another broad panel border of brown morocco with dense gilt dotted tooling and a decorative design of climbing flowers and leaves in inlaid green and pink morocco and SET WITH 140 AMETHYSTS in 14 berry clusters of 10 each, the center with an arabesque of interwoven inlaid green and purple morocco strapwork SET WITH 8 GARNETS AND 4 CHALCEDONIES GROUPED AROUND A CENTERPIECE OF ONE AMETHYST FRAMED BY 10 PEARLS; the lower cover outer border with identical tooling and SET WITH 4 GARNETS as corner ornaments, the inner panel border with a slightly different flower and leaf decoration with red inlay AND SET WITH 392 TURQUOISES AND 56 GARNETS in 56 clusters of single flowers, the center with a different arabesque SET WITH 8 GARNETS ALTERNATED WITH 8 MOTHER-OF-PEARL INSET PANELS around a quatrefoil of 4 MOTHER-OF-PEARL HEARTS AND 4 MOONSTONES; spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered in one compartment, an alternating left and right panel of inlaid brown, green black and purple leaf, branch and berry in the rest; board edges with single gilt fillet, broad turn-ins with interlaced and compartmented panels of inlaid black, brown and purple morocco gilt strapwork and filled with dense gilt tooling to a floral design with inlaid red morocco flowers; doublures of white morocco inlaid with a swirling gilt design with inlaid red morocco flowers and green leaves, the upper doublure with a central recessed arabesque panel, framed in narrow dark green and brown morocco strip, with an inner border of gilt tooling, SET WITH 6 GARNETS, 6 CHALCEDONIES AND 6 MOONSTONES AROUND AN OVAL PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (68 x 51mm., 2 5/8 x 2in.), in gilt metal frame and purple morocco strip; the lower doublure with a different arabesque centerpiece on inlaid brown morocco framed by an interlocking border of inlaid purple morocco incorporating 8 MOTHER-OF-PEARL INSETS AND A CENTRAL MOTHER-OF-PEARL STAR amidst palladium star tools; free endpages of brown morocco with gilt fillet and a broad inner border of gilt tooling and inlaid flower and leaf ornaments in inlaid green and blue morocco, around a semé of small gilt sunburst and palladium stars, the upper endpage with an inlaid central medallion of blue morocco framed in gilt and blue onlay around black strapwork and bearing the HWL gilt cipher, g.e., stamp-signed on upper turn-in: "Illuminated and Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London" and with their gilt cipher above on a red morocco inlay, blue morocco velvet lined box with hinged lids and snap fasteners.

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 16 leaves (i.e. written or decorated on 26 pages, including colophon), plus one blank vellum flyleaf at front and 2 paper flyleaves each at front and back, verse opening letters mostly in blue and other line opening letters in red, title and 14 of the pages with burnished gold lettering, title in blue with green, red and white brushwork ornament, 5 pages with large ornate scrollwork borders of stylized floral design in blues, reds and greens with burnished gold, 6 FULL-PAGE AND SMALLER MINIATURES illustrating the poems, 9 pages with fine brushwork borders in blue, red and green or green, all in fourteenth-century style; each poem with a half-title ("God's Acre", "Twilight", "The Lighthouse", "The Open Window", "Gaspar Becerra", "Daylight and Moonlight'" and "The Light of Stars"). Colophon statement: "These poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow have been written out on vellum, illuminated and bound by Messrs Sangorski & Sutcliffe of London and will not be duplicated [signed:] G. Sutcliffe."
