FIRST EDITION of one of Bunyan's masterpieces: J. A. Froude (in English Men of Letters: Bunyan, 1880) has said that this book "would have entitled Bunyan to a place among the masters of English literature." The DNB quotes Macaulay as saying that "if there had been no Pilgrim's Progress, the Holy War would have been the first of religious allegories."
