CROWLEY, Robert (1518?-1588), vicar of St.Giles, archdeacon of Hereford and poet. An Apologie, or defence, of those English Writers & Preachers which Cerberus the three headed Dog of Hell, chargeth wyth false doctrine, under the name of Predestination. (Lacking first and last blanks; Ee3 laid down; tear in blank portion of a4 repaired.) 19th-century brown morocco gilt, turn-ins with two double fillets, (spine rubbed), edges gilt. Provenance: Bute bookplate. FIRST EDITION. As a reformer, Crowley objected to the wearing of vestments in church and was in dispute with Archbishop Parker. He was imprisoned and resigned his archdeaconry in 1566. STC 6076
