LEE, ROBERT E., GENERAL, C.S.A. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("R E LEE") AS PRESIDENT OF WASHINGTON COLLEGE TO G. A. CHASE, LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA, 5 MARCH 1866. 1 3/4 PAGES, 8VO, 200 X 125MM (8 X 5 IN.), INTEGRAL BLANK, MINOR DISCOLORATION, OTHERWISE IN FINE CONDITION.
LEE ALLUDES TO THE COLLEGE'S LOSSES IN THE WAR AND PLANS TO REVAMP ITS CURRICULUM
Lee introduces Washington College's Reverend G.W. White to G.A. Chase, a benefactor to the school. "In a former letter I informed you, that the Trustees of Washington College, were indeavoring [sic] by individual contributions to repair the losses sustained by the College, during the war; and to expand the course of instruction, to meet the present wants of the country. These efforts have been very generously responded to both in Virginia and elsewhere, not withstanding the great pressure of the times. To carry their plan into full effect, the Bd of Trustees have enlarged their field of operations; & have recently appointed the Revd G.W. White, son of the Revd Dr. White, Pastor of the Presbyterian church in this place, to visit Kentucky, and to make known to the people of the state, the condition of the college. As he desires some one in Louisville with whom he can confer, I have taken the liberty to introduce him to you, feeling assured that you will extend to him such kindness as may be in your power."
